As an expert in gastrointestinal tumors, deputy director of the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and director of the third district of colorectal and anal surgery department, Wang Lei has been studying colorectal cancer and radioactive enteritis prevention and treatment for more than 20 years. In March this year, Wang Lei and his team won the first prize of the 2018 Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award.

Devoting to his career made him forget his illness

Wang Lei’s father is a general surgeon. With the original intention of curing diseases and saving lives, he followed his father’s footsteps and also applied to the Department of Clinical Medicine at Zhengzhou University. Although he was transferred to the oral medicine major, he never gave up on his dream of being a surgeon.

In 1995, Wang Lei went south from his hometown of Henan to Guangzhou and studied general surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University. In 1996, he was admitted to the then Sun Yat-sen Medical University and became the first dean of Zhongshan Sixth Hospital and former executive vice president of Sun Yat-sen University. After graduation, he stayed at the school to work in the Department of Gastroenterology of Zhongshan First Hospital.

After a doctorate in 2000. In September 2001, with the support of the hospital, he went to the United States to enter the field of molecular medicine and engaged in postdoctoral research in the field of digestive tract tumors for three and a half years.
