In the past year, Wang Lei has accepted the dual roles of his advanced cancer patients and oncology experts.

As an expert in gastrointestinal tumors, deputy director of the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and director of the Third District of Colorectal and Anal Surgery, Wang Lei has been studying colorectal cancer and radioactive enteritis prevention and treatment for more than 20 years. In March this year, Wang Lei and his team won the first prize of the 2018 Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award.

But this surgeon, who has repeatedly achieved major scientific research results in recent years, was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer last year.

Original surgery changes the fate of patients

In the field of intestinal cancer diagnosis and treatment, Wang Lei has always been a “unpopular” scientist. He is particularly concerned about the radioactive damage caused to patients by radiotherapy, an area where he is not valued and difficult to achieve results. He has been doing it for more than 10 years.

In the medical field, patients with advanced rectal cancer generally use synchronous chemotherapy and then surgical resection before surgery. However, while radiotherapy kills tumors, it can also cause excessive damage to the adjacent organs, causing radioactive enteritis, causing patients to suffer after surgery, which is very painful.

Wang Lei said that as a clinician, he has a “strong sense of crisis.” He is accustomed to carefully planning before the operation, timely summary after the operation, and does his best to allow patients to retain more physiological functions and reduce complications. Since 2010, Wang Lei and his mentor Professor Wang Jianping’s team have joined hands with 15 medical hospitals across the country to successfully establish a new preoperative “simple full-quantity chemotherapy” and no radiotherapy treatment plan, opening a new chapter in the treatment of rectal cancer.

Positive mentality faces the “king of cancer”

In March 2018, a staff physical examination report organized by the hospital showed that Wang Lei’s tumor marker CEA was abnormally increased. The further examination results were astonishing: in the advanced stage of pancreatic cancer, cancer cells had spread to the liver.

Wang Lei’s student and attending physician of colorectal and anal surgery, Ma Tenghui, clearly remembered that on the day of the physical examination, Wang Lei was still performing surgery on the patient. After the operation, he felt “very tired and his physical strength was not as good as before”, “No one expected the result to be so bad. ” 

Pancreatic cancer is called the “king of cancer” for its high mortality, deep hiding and rapid spreading characteristics. After many years of research in the field of tumors, Wang Lei knew very well what this meant. When he returned home that day, Wang Lei held his wife’s hand and looked at the ceiling, and it was a bit difficult to accept this fact.

But Wang Lei quickly adjusted his mindset. He decided to “try” once, actively participate in the design of his surgical plan, and adopt a more “radical” surgical plan to remove the tumor more thoroughly.

On April 1, 2018, after more than 10 hours of surgery, Wang Lei’s upper abdominal cavity was empty. The operation was very smooth, but it also meant the beginning of a difficult life: his body’s temperature control and regulation The ability has dropped significantly; he lost the ability to eat independently, and needed to rely on nutritional needles to maintain his life… The originally tall and strong body has become weakened.

The chemotherapy after the operation almost dropped Wang Lei’s hair. However, two months after the operation, he stepped onto the podium of the ASCO conference. Before giving the report, he was injected with a nutrition bag and lay on the bed for 10 hours to store his physical strength.

He did not stop scientific research and work. In a year, outpatient clinics, academic conferences, and lectures have not stopped; while taking out drips, he participated in Wednesday’s discussions; as long as his body allows, he will still have key operations…

Penglishing himself in his career made him forget his illness

Wang Lei’s father was an general surgeon. With the original intention of curing diseases and saving lives, he followed his father’s footsteps and also applied for the Department of Clinical Medicine at Zhengzhou University. Although he was transferred to the major of oral medicine, he never gave up his dream of being a surgeon.

In 1995, Wang Lei went south from his hometown of Henan to study general surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University. In 1996, he was admitted to the then Sun Yat-sen Medical University and became the first president of Zhongshan Sixth Hospital and former Zhongshan UniversityA student of Wang Jianping, executive vice president, stayed at school to work in the Department of Gastroenterology and Surgery, Zhongshan No. 1 Hospital after graduation.

In just over ten years since its establishment, the Sixth Hospital of Zhongshan has developed rapidly. In 2016, the hospital was rated as a Grade A hospital. The gastrointestinal and anal surgery led by Wang Jianping, Lanping, Wang Lei and others have gradually ranked among the forefront of the field of colorectal and anal diseases diagnosis and treatment in China. With a series of research results, in March this year, Wang Lei and his team won the first prize of the 2018 Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award.
